Welcome
Welcome to the NH Agricultural Experiment Station located within the College of Life Sciences and Agricultural at the University of New Hampshire. The NH AES is a research organization that partners with the State of New Hampshire and the USDA to administer and distribute federal and state research dollars to create new knowledge and technology to serve the state and region. A part of the Land Grant University system, the NH-AES is comprised of a nationally known team of basic and applied researchers. The collectively faculty work on more than 80 projects and teach courses within the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture. The NH AES supports and guides research-related activities in the college and university and encourages new research initiatives including multidisciplinary research. In addition, the office serves to promote research endeavors that will attract external funding sources.
AES scientists' research projects contribute to maintaining an economically viable and environmentally sustainable food, forest, aquaculture and farm systems for New Hampshire. The NH AES also works to address the five national Agricultural Experiment Station goals:
Goal 1: An Agricultural System that is Highly Competitive in the Global Economy
Goal 2: A Safe and Secure Food and Fiber System
Goal 3: A Healthy, Well-Nourished Population
Goal 4: An Agricultural system that Protects Natural Resources and the Environment
Goal 5: Enhanced Economic Opportunity and Quality of Life for Americans
Changes are occurring in the NH AES. Our research efforts are moving increasingly to multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary awards. Our focus is expanding to include new initiatives in sustainable, local, and value added agriculture reflecting the needs of the state of New Hampshire.
Listed below are a few new initiatives started, or continuing, this past year:
New Initiatives:
The Organic Dairy Farm
The Organic Dairy Farm, to be established at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), will create a valuable resource to provide research, expertise, and demonstration to organic dairy farmers and those who are considering or already transitioning to organic dairy operations. This organic dairy will educate a new generation of organic dairy farmers and will help build profitability for the region’s dairy industry.
Young Plant Center
AES scientists are partnering with industry in the formation of the UNH Young Plant Research Center. This leading industry-driven research program encompasses nutrition, plant health, and genetics for the production, propagation, and shipping of young plant material.
Bio-Diesel Fuel
The AES is helping to bring to campus a conversion plant that will produce bio-diesel from used vegetable oil and other biological sources. It is anticipated that this fuel will help heat greenhouses as well as power our farm trucks and equipment.
Organic Garden and Composting
The UNH Organic Gardening Club and UNH Students Without Boarders Club have created an organic garden with assistance from the NH AES. The AES continues to help create a sustainable, self-contained organic garden. Additionally, with the UNH Office of Sustainability Programs, the AES has expanded the UNH composting operation and is now creating both conventional and organic compost.
We invite you to contact us at the NH AES; interest, suggestions and comments are always welcome. As we attempt to provide the technology and knowledge to serve the state, your input is important.
