UNH Student Volunteers for Relay for Life, Earns Credit

Kristen Morgovonik wants to help people. In particular, the University of New Hampshire freshman from Exeter has chosen the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life event at UNH, April 19 - 20, 2008, to work with. Cancer is an issue that has touched her life personally since her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Unlike other volunteers, Morgovonik is earning college credit through three courses at the Thompson School of Applied Science's community leadership program at UNH. Story >>>

UNH Large Pelagics Public Seminar Series Launches April 8

The University of New Hampshire's Large Pelagics Research Center (LPRC) launches its Nelson "Hammer" Beideman Public Seminar Series April 8 with a lecture on the fate of Atlantic billfishes. The seminar series, named for a successful swordfish boat captain and advocate of fisheries research and conservation, presents internationally acclaimed researchers on billfish, tuna, swordfish and sharks. UNH Thompson School to Launch Culinary Arts Program in Fall '08

Beginning fall 2008, the University of New Hampshire will offer a culinary arts program in its Thompson School of Applied Science (TSAS). This unique chef training program will allow students to partner with University Hospitality Services, where they will have the opportunity to cook meals at Holloway Commons dining hall and the university-run New England Center. Nature: Streams Remove Significant Amounts Of Nitrogen, Preventing Downstream "Dead Zones"

Small streams play a significant role in retaining human-generated nitrogen, serving as the kidneys of watersheds by removing nitrogen before it ends up in estuaries and oceans, finds a paper published this week in the journal Nature. University of New Hampshire professor William McDowell and research scientist Jody Potter, both in the department of natural resources, are among the co-authors of the study, led by Patrick Mulholland of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tenn.
